Alice Springs Town Council recently hosted the Alice Springs Masters Games, with Council staff and Alderman joining in the events.
Staged biennially since the early 1980’s, the games are known locally as ‘The Friendly Games’ because of the camaraderie and good spirited nature of the competitors and the environment created by the games village atmosphere of Alice Springs.
Organised by the Australian Sports Commission, the event brings thousands of people to Alice Springs to compete in a variety of sports, including archery, softball, squash, table ten pin bowling and table tennis.
Alice Springs Town Council is a Diamond sponsor and contributes both financially and with in kind support to the value of $200,000.
As well as maintaining and preparing Council’s sporting facilities to a high standard, this year, many Council staff and Aldermen participated in the games.
They won bronze in baseball and cycling; silver in basketball, tennis, the five kilometre walk and beach volleyball; as well as gold in the team triathlon and table tennis.
Council’s athletes also took out gold and silver in soccer, as well as three gold, two silver and two bronze in swimming events.
