Redland community tree planting to offset carbon

Redland City Council residents have joined Mayor Melva Hobson to plant
400 native trees at a community tree planting at Orchard Beach Wetlands, Redland Bay.

The trees will help offset carbon emissions from this year’s Christmas by Starlight event on 11 December.

Christmas by Starlight is a free annual concert attracting thousands of Redland residents every year.

Headlined by rising star Jessica Mauboy, this year’s concert will also feature talented local performers.

“As a Council, we are very conscious of the impact of our activities on the environment and when it comes to hosting a major community event, we want to lead the way by being environmentally conscious,” Councillor Hobson said.

“Planting native trees locally has the added benefits of creating habitat for local wildlife and addressing issues such as water salinity, soil erosion and biodiversity loss.

“The number of trees required to offset per tonne of carbon dioxide varies from four to 10, depending on location, species of tree, soil type and type of planting.”

The planting involved
a variety of species, replicating those in the area. By extending the width of this significant wildlife corridor, this planting will benefit an array of local wildlife including koalas and glossy black cockatoos.
