F Cubed Australia Pty Ltd has developed its Carocell unit (Direct Solar Desalination) over the last five years. An Australian invention, the company believes there is nothing comparable on the world market.
Manufactured in Somerton Victoria, commercial production of these state of the art solar water desalination units began in August.
“We believe the Carocell unit will be of immense benefit, in providing an economical solution to the supply of potable water throughout Australia,” said Stuart Eastaugh, National Marketing Manager. “Our units can produce clean potable drinking water from any water source including sea water; contaminated, polluted or brackish water, and reverse osmosis waste using the sun’s energy.”
The Carocell – Direct Solar Desalination requires only sunshine as its power source. Furthermore, it does not produce any greenhouse emissions, nor does it use filters, chemicals or electronics. As a completely natural process, it is extremely environmentally friendly.
Producing distilled (desalinated) water from any water source including industrial wastewater, this process eliminates bacteria and pathogens, and removes all chemicals and heavy metals.
When Carocell panels operate as a series in a continuous operation, zero liquid discharge can be achieved.
Early next year, Mitchell Shire Council in Central Victoria will commence using the Carocell panels to treat leachate liquid waste at its landfill.
“We have been getting rid of this liquid waste through evaporation but this won’t work all year round,” said John Smyth, Waste Management Coordinator. “We see the Carocell Solar process as a great alternative as we can run this system all day and in any weather. As well as minimising the chance of contaminants entering the environment, it is cost effective. The main costs are in the installation but once it is up and running operating costs will be minimal.
“The clean water it captures will be regularly tested to ensure it is suitable for reuse as irrigation. The EPA is happy that we proceed with this system so long as we carry out regular testing of the water produced.”
