Flood risk highlighted by Australian floods

The loss of lives and property through floods in Queensland, NSW and Victoria in January, have highlighted the importance of flood studies for Local Government nationally.

The unprecedented rains and conditions have shown that flood modelling is a viable method of planning and those predictions could tragically at times occur.

Sutherland Shire Council, like other council’s across NSW, has been working closely with its communities as improved flood modelling identifies new risks to land owners.

Council last year received numerous complaints from residents expressing concern over the alterations to flood notations to Section 149 Certificates.

Sutherland Shire Council remains committed to work on flood modelling which is identifying new zones of flood risk, and finding others where the flood risk was less than first believed.

Potential property buyers and land owners need information available on the risk of flood and by undertaking flood studies and identifying problem areas councils are able to take appropriate action in an attempt to mitigate potential impacts.
