Victorian first with larger recycling bins

In a Victorian first, Moonee Valley residents will be able to upsize their recycling bin to a new, larger 360 litre one. Moonee Valley Mayor John Sipek said with residents firmly committed to recycling, this will allow families to recycle even more.

"It’s not hard for a family to fill the current recycling bins and these larger bins will make it easier for people to do the right thing,” he said. "Residents can choose the bin that best suits their family’s needs. I look forward to seeing these super size recycling bins being put out on their fortnightly collection day.”

The upgrade will be particularly suitable for bigger families that generate larger amounts of recyclables.

Council conducted kerbside waste audits and found that some households with larger families filled their 240 litre recycling bins so had an overflow of recyclables into the landfill bins. The 360 litre bins do not appear much bigger than the current 240 litre bins because of the clever design. The bins have a bigger handle and larger wheels so they are still easy to move.

Made by Australian manufacturer SULO, it is only 360 litre Australian made recycling bin on the market.

Council’s portfolio holder for Environment and Conservation Councillor Shirley Cornish said the feedback about the bins from the trials had been extremely positive. Recycling in Moonee Valley is collected fortnightly, which helps to reduce carbon emissions from collection trucks.
