National award for asset and financial management for Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island Council is now recognised as one of the leading small councils in the field of asset and financial management after it was category winner in the National awards for Local Government.

The national award for Councils with less than 15,000 ratepayers recognises excellence in asset and financial management for projects or initiatives that build the sustainability and capacity of Local Governments in order in meeting future community needs.

Mayor Jayne Bates said that Kangaroo Island community can be proud of its Council as it is now recognised as the leading small council in asset and financial management in Australia.

“While all the hard work was about doing the best that we can with what we have got, and not about winning awards, it is great for Council and our dedicated staff to be acknowledged for this level of achievement,” she said “One component of the ‘hard work’ has been the development and implementation of Asset Management Plans (AMPs) as a key management tool, both for the maintenance and renewal of our assets and understanding the long term financial implications in coming years.

“It is best summed up that Council has created ‘science’ behind its decision making process. This ‘science’ will serve our community not only today but well into the future.

“The work has already lead to significant outcomes with the announcement of additional State Government funding of $2 million per year for Kangaroo Island roads, a direct result of the integrity of these plans.”

Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Simon Crean said Local Government plays a vital role in the life of our nation – not only in the delivery of services, but in building communities.

“The quality of the entries submitted was as always, very high, making it a difficult task for the independent judging panel to determine the winners,” the Minister said.
