Lake Fleet wins national award

Strong savings in fuel has led to Lake Macquarie City Council being awarded the 2011 Fleet Environment Award by the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA).

Council’s Manager Mechanical Depot and Supply Services Mick Gray said the award is the culmination of four years of effort.

"Since the 2007/2008 financial year, Council has reduced fuel consumption by 12 per cent, reduced greenhouse gas emissions by almost 20 per cent, and achieved fuel savings of more than $120,000," he said.

"Council owns and operates hundreds of plant and fleet items, including 170 cars and light commercials.

"We are very pleased to receive national recognition for our efforts, and we are even more pleased to make environmental and financial savings for the community."

Strategies used to achieve these results include reducing engine size and an increase in the number of diesel powered vehicles.

The AfMA is a not for profit organisation with more than 550 members throughout Australia and New Zealand. Its members come from all industries and all levels of government.
