The City of Busselton has been declared Western Australia’s sixth regional city.
WA Local Government Minister John Castrilli proclaimed the new city (formerly Busselton Shire Council) during the closing concert of the annual Festival of Busselton.
Mr Castrilli led Councillor Ian Stubbs through the ceremonial oath of office before presenting him with the Mayoral Chain and proclaiming him the first Mayor of the City of Busselton.
The change to city status marks an important stage in the growth of the once small seaside community. The City of Busselton has one of WA’s fastest growing populations, which now stands at more than 30,000 residents.
In his inaugural address, Mayor Stubbs said the proclamation was driven by the need to be recognised as a major regional centre and ensure long term sustainability.
"We’re optimistic that this change to city status will lead to greater investment in major facilities and infrastructure across the region and return real benefit to the community and the broader south-west region.
"While we remain committed to preserving the unique lifestyle our area provides, we know we must plan for future growth and provide better opportunities for our community and youth."
The proclamation follows nearly 12 months of broad community consultation that demonstrated support for the change, but a strong desire to retain the historic name of Busselton.
Dignitaries at the ceremonial declaration included Mayor Matsuo Furuya from the City of Busselton’s Sister City, Sugito in Japan, and the Japanese Consul GeneralTatsuo Ishikawa.
