My local application

South Australian local government information could soon be available on smartphones and tablets.

The Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) has called for expressions of interest to provide an online information application for mobile phones and computers.

My Local is approaching its final design stage, after representatives of 18 councils identified mobile device access as the most relevant way to expand the successful SA Council Maps initiative.

The new application, managed through the LGASA IT department, will give up-to-the-minute information about land development and zones, council services including waste collection, libraries and leisure facilities, parks and gardens.

"So much council information is based on location, it makes sense for us to take this sort of information to mobile devices." LGASA President Mayor Kym McHugh said.

"If you are out for a family drive and see an attractive piece of land, the new My Local application could tell you what planning zone the land is in, and whether its in a bushfire protection or flood plain zone.

"If you are visiting or have moved into a new area, My Local will advise you about local facilities and services."

The application will include information about state and federal electorates, childcare facilities and schools, beaches, parks, rubbish collection days and recycling centres.

Mayor McHugh said My Local had the potential to help people to engage more with their councils and communities.
