Whitsunday Regional Council’s ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day activity in Proserpine was a great success!
Council’s Manager of Community Development and Projects, Debra Carrington said that local youth participated in the Sunnies for Sight Day activities Proserpine Youthspace
"The ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day is an initiative of the International Centre for Eye Care Education (ICEE) and is a day for young people to learn about their vision, eye care and how they can join the fight against avoidable blindness and vision impairment," Ms Carrington said.
The activities were co-ordinated by Council’s Youth Services Officer, Ms Anna Smith and were facilitated by Julie Weir from Eyecare Plus and Damien Plackett from the Department of Communities.
Local youth aged 12–17 years participated in activities that were fun and quite unique, such as a blindfolded ball game, designed to increase awareness and understanding of what it might be like to be vision impaired and to encourage them to utilise their other senses.
They also undertook a variety of interesting eye tests and received information on the importance of sunglasses and looking after their sight.
