Mackay Regional Council in Queensland is running a unique program dedicated to assisting the women in the region cope with the aftermath of natural disasters.
‘Weather the Storm’ is funded by the Office for Women and the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and Mackay is the only regional council in Queensland to be offered the program.
‘Weather the Storm’ recognises that during and after a disaster, women, and especially those with children, have particular needs and vulnerabilities. The program establishes contact groups, provides ongoing support and assistance, and gives women in the Mackay region the tools and skills to cope in the event of a disaster.
Sessions are conducted by a trained facilitator with a background in community development and community disaster education and recovery, with a key aim of the program being to strengthen communities and build resilience.
