Apprentice of the Year, Ben Goodier, loves working outdoors and says that his four-year apprenticeship with The Hills Shire Council has provided him with ‘invaluable’ hands-on industry experience.
Mr Goodier began his apprenticeship three years ago and has been undertaking a Certificate III in horticulture, parks and gardens at Richmond TAFE, learning green skills such as park and garden maintenance that he has been putting to good use in the community.
“I enjoy being able to work outside and have learnt skills such as park maintenance, chemical use, irrigation, landscaping and machinery use,” Mr Goodier said.
“I’ve been based in Council’s rural team working out in areas such as Kenthurst where I’ve gained hands-on experience to supplement my course.”
Mr Goodier received the award as leading apprentice in the horticultural division of Richmond TAFE and was presented his awards at a ceremony last week. Council’s General Manager, Dave Walker, commended Ben on receiving his award.
“Council is proud of the enthusiasm, hard work and commitment that has distinguished Ben from his peers,” Mr Walker said.
“We encourage employees to improve their skills to benefit our residents,” he said. “I have every confidence that Ben will apply this same determination to his professional life and we wish him every success in years to come.”
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Greg Burnett, said Council’s commitment to training staff was a bonus for the community through improved customer service.
“Congratulations to Ben on this great outcome. I’m sure he will continue to provide excellent service to the people of our Shire in the future.”
