Residents of the City of Greater Bendigo helped plant over 5000 native trees and shrubs in an area called Maiden Gully as part of National Tree Day celebrations on July 29th.
Mayor Cr Alec Sandner said the site has been chosen because it is a highly visible area that links to an important creek reserve in Maiden Gully.
“The tree planting was organised by the City of Greater Bendigo with the assistance of the Maiden Gully Progress Association to provide an opportunity for families to get involved in National Tree Day activities.
“The planting improves the natural values of this area for local wildlife and for the community’s enjoyment of our local bushland,” said Councillor Sandler.
National Tree Day has become Australia’s largest community tree planting event, with more than 15 million trees and shrubs planted across Australia since the Day was first introduced in 1996.
“Each year the City of Greater Bendigo partners with a local landcare or community group to help coordinate a planting on a community site and I would like to thank the Maiden Gully Progress Association for being our partners this year and for all the valuable work they do for their local community,” said Cr Sandner.
