Healthier Baw Baw

A project to develop and implement a municipal-wide physical activity and healthy eating initiative in Baw Baw Shire has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

Mayor of Baw Baw Shire, Councillor Diane Blackwood, said that she was very excited about the prospect of Baw Baw Shire Council taking the lead on the project: “Our Healthy Communities team put together a fabulous proposal and that was acknowledged with this funding.”

“It is widely recognised that prevention is better than cure. If we at Baw Baw can help our citizens lead healthier lives the whole community benefits,” said the Mayor.

The goal of the initiative is to improve community awareness of key physical activity and nutrition messages and increase access to health and wellbeing services, centres and activities. The Healthy Communities team plan to demonstrate the outcomes of the programs through effective monitoring and evaluation of the local action.

The initiative’s focus is on the Indigenous community, older people, people with a disability and the long term unemployed.
