Shoalhaven City Council will be providing free ‘Safer by Design, training to local volunteers as part of the ongoing Home Safety program.
The Safer by Design course is a joint initiative between Council, NSW Police and the NSW State Government aimed at reducing the incidence of breaking and entering within the Shoalhaven.
Participants in the free course will receive training in conducting home safety audits.
Once completed, volunteers would then conduct safety audits on private properties within their local area.
Shoalhaven City Council Director of City Services and Operations, Bill Paterson said the Safety by Design training was part of Council’s Home Safety program, a concept designed to reduce crime rates within the Shoalhaven.
“Council received over $30,000 in funding from the NSW Attorney General to assist in the implementation of the Home Safety program following on from the endorsement of the Shoalhaven Crime Action Plan 2010,” said Mr Paterson.
“Part of this program is the implementation of free training for volunteers in Safer by Design, a scheme designed to reduce crimes rates through the provision of safety audits on private property.
“I would encourage any local residents with an interest in reducing the numbers of break and enters within the Shoalhaven to contact Council and take part in the upcoming free training.”
Training is free and involves participants to attend a four day course in Nowra during the first week of October 2012.
