Peter Fitz steps down

Long serving president of Government Communications Australia (GCA) Peter Fitz has called it a day and was honoured in style at the third annual GCA Awards for Communications Excellence held in Sydney on Thursday 14th February.

In front of his peers Mr Fitz received a lifetime achievement award, highlighting his commitment to local government communications.
Mr Fitz was surprised by the accolade and thanked his fellow executive members for their support during his tenure.

“I am truly humbled. I was not expecting this and can’t say that I was prepared for it.”

“It is an honour to be recognised by the people I have worked with for so long and I can definitely say that I will miss being part of such a dedicated team of professionals,” Mr Fitz added.

According to newly elected president Deb Ganderton, Peter’s contribution to the GCA was huge and he will surely be missed.

“Peter’s vision, energy and ability to get people excited is legendary. His commitment and service to local government has been an inspiration to communicators across local governments throughout Australia and beyond.”

“On behalf of the GCA’s Executive I thank Peter for his dedication, support and tireless efforts to ensure a strong, united industry group that exists to share ideas, network and advances our profession. This will be his legacy.

“Peter now leaves us in a great position, ready to take the next step as a national body for Government Communications professionals seeking to ensure our services are valued by our organisations and their communities.”

Peter Fitz
After years of pushing the boundaries as a Marketing Communications executive in the Victorian Public Service, Peter joined the City of Geelong where he quickly realised that local government is where it all happens.

After a healthy stint reinvigorating Geelong’s ‘brand’, Peter moved to the City of Moreland, one of Victoria’s most multicultural municipalities. There Peter developed the award winning CALD COM  Storyboards, which visually translate messages to people with little or no English skills

Before retiring Peter initiated Moreland’s Digital Local Government Project – Moreland Connect as part of the arrival of the National Broadband Network.
On a national level Peter has been an Executive with the GCA for the past seven years, and was at the helm throughout the transition from the former NSW Local Government Public Relations Association to the current national direction – Government Communications Australia.
