Celebration of a community’s resilience

Maranoa Council, emergency services and community groups recently celebrated the resilience of the Roma community on the anniversary of the 2011 floods, with the unveiling of the town’s new Celebration Stones.

The stones, which are also entrance signs to the town, are part of a project created to acknowledge Roma’s flood events and pay homage to an extremely resilient and determined community.

The three stones are located:

East entrance – near the Quality Inn Overlander Homestead
West entrance – Mitchell Road
North entrance – across from the Roma Airport

Maranoa Deputy Mayor Scott Wason said Roma residents have been through a great deal in the past few years, so this is a great opportunity to acknowledge their strong sense of community.

“We have a very tight community full of a lot of generous and strong people; it is fantastic that we now have monuments to symbolise this, and
share the history of the flood events.”

Roma’s Celebration Stones have been funded through Maranoa Regional Council and the Community Development and Recovery Package, a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement to commemorate the floods in Roma.
