Tasmanian councils deliver excellence

Three Tasmanian councils have been recognised for their dedication to making a positive difference in their local communities at the Local Government Conference at Wrest Point.

Launceston City, Kentish and Kingborough Councils emerged as the three category winners of the 2013 Local Government Awards for Excellence, announced by Tasmanian Local Government Minister Bryan Green.

Local Government Association Tasmania President Barry Easther said the Awards aimed to promote and reward outstanding achievement in Local Government, recognising initiatives that are delivering a positive result for Tasmanian communities.

“Kentish Council won the Delivering Excellence for our Communities award for the new Kentish Health Care Centre, which provides a range of health services for the community within one central location.

“These facilities reduce the need for Kentish residents to travel long distances to access essential health care services, provide enhanced services for patients, as well as better health outcomes for residents of the Kentish community.

“Kingborough Council won the Delivering Excellence in Natural and Built Environments award for bringing together a range of stakeholders to develop a plan to sustainably manage the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and lower Huon estuary waterways.

“The project provides a blueprint for future activity and sets a framework within which a multitude of users can engage and be responsible.”

The General Excellence award was presented to Launceston City Council for its state-of-the-art visitor centre which features a blend of traditional and digital technology to provide services for all types of travellers.

“In implementing a new model, Council has responded to a changing demographic, with learning that would benefit other Tasmanian councils.”

The annual Local Government Awards for Excellence aim to promote outstanding achievement and inspire leading management practice and continuous improvement within the sector.
