Hike wraps up bushfire recovery activities

Margaret River’s Bushfire Recovery Working Group has hosted a hike along the fire-affected coast to mark the official wind up of recovery activities.

Meeting at Gnarabup, hikers were transported by bus to Ellensbrook where they hiked 14km along the Cape to Cape track back to Gnarabup and up to Gnarabar for a sundowner event.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Bushfire Recovery Officer Gemma Mincherton said all community members affected by the Margaret River bushfires in November 2011 were welcomed at the hike.

“The event was an opportunity for residents and volunteers to have a look at how rehabilitation efforts are helping the landscape to recover.

Those not keen on hiking were invited to attend the sundowner.

Augusta Margaret River Shire President Ray Colyer said the event marked the formal end of the recovery process but acknowledged the journey was ongoing for many.

“This event provides an opportunity to recognise the efforts of all those who have assisted in the official recovery process, which was predominantly community-led.

“I acknowledge there are still some people who are working to rebuild their lives after being impacted by the fires.

“We will continue to support them through our regular work.”
