The Lord Mayor of Hobart Alderman Damon Thomas has called a joint announcement by QANTAS and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) a great deal for Tasmanian Tourism.
In September QANTAS and MONA announced a new partnership designed to increase the number of tourists coming to Tasmania.
Alderman Thomas said that with QANTAS being such a major investor in Australian tourism, the announcement meant David Walsh’s unique museum would have a further window on the world, courtesy of the ‘flying kangaroo’.
“This is a win-win for QANTAS, MONA and Tasmania. I simply can’t think of a partnership anywhere that is likely to have a better impact on our tourist numbers.
“It is also particularly important for the city’s accommodation complexes and restaurants who will benefit from the new partnership.
“With MONA being a fantastic draw card for people visiting Hobart, our plans for Airport upgrading now need to step up a gear. Just prior to the Federal Election, the Prime Minister Tony Abbott promised a $38 million program to extend the runway and associated infrastructure at Hobart’s International Airport. This now requires a timetable for implementation.”
The announcement follows another joint announcement from QANTAS and the Tasmanian Government for a $4.35 million tourism cooperative agreement to promote Tasmania internationally and within Australia.
“Within a week Tasmanian tourism has received a massive confidence boost by being singled out for special attention by QANTAS on two occasions,” Alderman Thomas said.
