Cloncurry Unearthed celebrates community history

The official opening of Cloncurry Unearthed, Cloncurry’s first accredited Visitor Information Centre, marked a milestone in the growth of the community since the town’s discovery by Ernest Henry in the 1800’s.

The museum celebrates the history and diversity of Cloncurry, with information about Burke and Wills, local mining and pastoral industries as well as one of the most comprehensive gem and mineral collections in Australia.

Cloncurry Shire Council Mayor Andrew Daniels said this was a real achievement for the community, who were the driving force behind the project.
“The community saw a need to provide both travellers and locals with relevant information about the region.

“Cloncurry has such a rich history and locals are proud to have it on display. Cloncurry Unearthed is another example of our thriving community spirit.

“In April 2013 Cloncurry Unearthed hosted 786 visitors from far and wide – from Cairns to Tasmania, from Gosford to the USA. It highlights the importance of tourism to our region.“

Cloncurry Unearthed building commenced in January 2012 in the Mary Kathleen Park.

Since opening its doors and achieving accreditation status, visitor numbers to Cloncurry Unearthed have increased from 333 visitors in April 2012 to 786 visitors in April 2013.

Cloncurry Shire Council would like to acknowledge both State and Federal Governments for their funding contributions.
