Community day out celebrates sustainability

The Bland Shire community were treated to a great day out when Bland Shire Council hosted the “Bland Creek Catchment Committee (BCCC) Sustainable Lifestyle Expo” in October at West Wyalong.

The aim of the Expo was to showcase local businesses, products and services to educate and encourage the community in adopting more sustainable lifestyle practices.

Now in its fifth year, the Expo was a partnership between Bland Shire Council, the BCCC, the Lake Cowal Foundation, and the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority.

On a perfect spring day, the public checked out the latest innovations in sustainability in a relaxed atmosphere at West Wyalong’s McCann Park.

Displays ranged from solar power and water saving devices, to home composting, worm farming, eucalyptus oil, and fuel efficient cars.

The local Aboriginal Lands Council drew a lot of attention with a display on traditional cultural practices and bush tucker.

Other displays included the organisations of ‘Wires’ (Wildlife Rescue), Council Noxious Weeds display, Landcare and Lachlan Country Management Authority.

Also big hits were the alpacas for protection of livestock and a carp cooking demonstration.

The day was capped off with a presentation from special guests Dr Grahame Webb, world-renowned crocodile biologist, and wife Giovanna, from “60 Minutes” fame. Together they run Crocodylus Park, a crocodile farm near Darwin.

Just a few days before the Expo, Giovanna was crowned Australian Rural Woman of the Year for her work with employment pathways for Indigenous women.
