Young people from Margaret River, Busselton, Dunsborough and Nannup converged at the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) camp earlier this month for three action packed days.
Touring around to various towns in southwest Western Australia, the group participated in a range of sessions and activities, which promoted the development of new friendships and teamwork.
YAC’s are made up of young people between the ages of 12 and 25 who assist governments in understanding youth issues.
Shire of Augusta-Margaret River Community Development Trainee Emma Godridge said the first group activity was a canoe up the Blackwood River, where participants worked together to get past the shallow rapids and tricky obstacles of the river.
“It was a lot of fun, very entertaining and kicked off a great few days of outdoor activities,” she said.
“Any shyness was quickly overcome and the challenges forced us all to cooperate and participate.”
Emma said among the physical challenges faced was the climbing of a rock wall and construction of a self-supporting bridge.
A ‘visioning’ session held around the campfire also allowed the regional YAC members to plan for the year ahead and discuss the possibility for more regional events.
“It was really good to see the participants work together to conquer each activity,” she said.
“People were going out of their way to assist others face their fears and problem–solve.”
