The number of public toilets at Coogee Beach could be more than doubled as part of a draft plan to be considered by Randwick City Council.
The draft proposal suggests constructing new mens, womens and accessible toilets, showers and change rooms on the lower beach promenade where the current Lifeguard office is located.
Randwick City Mayor, Scott Nash, said if the idea proceeded, detailed designs would need to be prepared along with a comprehensive community consultation program.
“The lower beach promenade seems like the right place. It would mean that toilets could be built into the promenade without taking away any open space from the park, and the existing toilets at Goldstein Reserve would remain, effectively doubling capacity.
“But there is still a lot more work to do before we can start building. We need to first draft detailed plans and then we’ll be seeking feedback from the community on the proposal.”
The proposal comes following ongoing concern that the existing toilets on Goldstein Reserve, near the Arden Street bus stop are not enough to cater for the Coogee Beach crowds, particularly over summer.
“Millions of people flock to Coogee Beach every summer, so building additional toilets and change facilities on the lower promenade, closer to the sand and sea, makes a lot of sense,” said Mayor Nash
“At the moment, each year, we need to bring in temporary toilets to alleviate the pressure on the existing toilets in Goldstein Reserve. But a more permanent solution is definitely necessary.”
The draft report proposes allocating $4.3 million for the project in the 2014-15 Council Budget.
