Feature landscaping, sculptures, public amenities, feature lighting and an outdoor learning environment are all in the works for the City of Mount Gambier’s major rail lands rejuvenation project.
City of Mount Gambier Manager Engineering, Daryl Morgan, said a team of engineers were working tirelessly as some of the planned features are starting to take shape, using imaginative designs in step with the location’s cultural history and urban setting.
“The major features of the Master Plan focus on open spaced parklands and gardens that are of high quality, ensuring the space becomes attractive and stimulating and that it adds to the environmental fabric of Mount Gambier.”
Gifted to the Council and community in 2004, the parcel of land will provide a new green space in the heart of the City when it is completed.
Works are also underway on wetlands development with a storm water treatment facility on the south-western corner of the site being constructed, as well as constructing shared paths running east to west along the rail corridor.
Work will also be carried out on retaining the historic railway platform at the site, while trees and grass will be established at the site once the temperatures start to cool.
Mr Morgan said the community had been very patient during the first stage of the project.
“It’s a bit like building a house – you make a mess, but it eventually comes together and it’s always the last few details that make it look really good.
“It will initially look uncoordinated and chaotic, but then the pieces start to fit together and we can sit back and be proud of what we created.”
