Cycling towards better health

Bankstown City Council will have a lot more cyclists in the future with The Bicycle Network supplying free bikes to families all across the region

Milperra sisters Mariam and Bahia Halwani and cousins Amin and Mariam Haddad joined nearly 300 teenagers across Bankstown who received a new bike for free at the launch of Happiness Cycle program at Dunc Gray Velodrome in March.

The program, opened to 15 and 16 year-olds, is aimed at fighting obesity and getting teenagers more active.

Each participant makes a small pledge to become more active as part of earning their new set of wheels.

During the launch, the teenagers were given a bike kit to assemble with assistance of bike technicians as well as advice on bike safety. They also received a helmet, lights and locks.

“My pledge is to make sure I ride my bike at least once a week,” said Mariam.

“It’s going to be good because I can go riding with my sister and my cousins and see what’s around Bankstown.”

Bankstown City Mayor Khal Asfour said teens participating in the program made similar pledges.

“This is the first time Happiness Cycle is being launched in New South Wales so it’s a great opportunity for our young people to be part of something special.
“For a small commitment to get active, you get a free new bike and you help in the fight against obesity.”

Participants could also access the Happiness Cycle digital app that will allow them to track their goals, engage with friends and interact with the program’s ambassador BMX Champion Sam Willoughby.
