Community garden grows

The Eastern Park Community Garden in Baw Baw Shire continues to progress thanks to six successful working bees organised by Growing Together Baw Baw in April and May.

The working bees began the major development of the community garden as 50 volunteers built garden beds, an arbour, installed irrigation, bench seating and dry stone walls.

The storage pavilion has also been constructed and is now complete.

Dry stone wall installation workshops have been held, with a local stonemason donating his time to train the community volunteers.

The work will continue over the winter months with development of raised all-access gardens, exploration gardens, ponds, a hothouse and private rental plots.
Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Councillor Murray Cook commended Growing Together Baw Baw for encouraging the community to be involved in the project.

“It is really impressive to see so many people wanting to be part of an extremely valuable project for the community.

“We are now one step closer to providing a valuable area for the community to share knowledge of their experiences in the garden and the relationship between gardening and a healthier lifestyle.”

A hands-on open day will commemorate the launch of the Eastern Park community garden in October as part of the Gardivalia Festival of Gardens.

The project is jointly funded by the Baw Baw Shire Council and the Victorian Government’s Regional Growth Fund, with support from the Warragul Community House, service groups and individual donations.
