United Nations environment award

The City of Boroondara has won a World Environment Day Award for its investment in biodiversity initiatives.

The United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) Awards celebrate World Environment Day, which falls on the fifth of June each year.

The awards recognise innovative and outstanding environmental programs and initiatives across Australia, as well as the important work of environmental leaders.

Council’s submission, Integrating and Celebrating Habitat and Wildlife Within Boroondara, won the Local Government – Best Specific Environment Initiative category.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Coral Ross accepted the award at a presentation dinner in Sydney on Friday 13 June, and said it reinforces the great work being done by Council to deliver on objectives from the Urban Biodiversity Strategy 2013-23.

“The submission captured Boroondara’s progress on its first year actions from the strategy including establishing new biodiversity zones, delivering the popular Backyard Biodiversity program, the design of new interpretive signage and assessment of 200 new indigenous trees on the Significant Tree List.”

“The award was for the work Council has done protecting biodiversity habitat for native animals and fauna in our City.

“It was a tight field, with four great finalists from Melbourne, Adelaide, Darebin and Randwick, so it was an honour for Council’s Environmental Planning, and Parks and Gardens teams to be acknowledged and celebrated.”
