Choice and control empowers people with disability

Cutting the ribbon on the My Choice evaluation

An evaluation report of a self-managed funding pilot shows that giving people with disability the power to manage their supports gave them greater choice of and control over services they receive, Minister for Disability ACT Joy Burch said today.

The 12-month My Choice trial involved 17 people with disability, with support by the pilot coordinator, family members, carers and friends.

“My Choice demonstrates what is possible when people with disability have control to manage their supports and services,” Ms Burch said.

“As we transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), we are empowering people with disability to have the choice of services they want and control over the funding used to pay for this.

“The evaluation highlighted that participants found it to be beneficial and was a positive experience to have the control to direct their funds as they saw fit.

“As one participant said: Being in charge of my own destiny… Being in control of my care. It gave me the direction of where I am now at this very moment.

“The My Choice pilot offers a body of evidence that can be shared with the sector to build its capacity and understanding of consumer controlled approaches.”

My Choice was delivered by Anglicare and Community Connections in partnership with the ACT Government.
