The Urangan Pier in Fraser Coast Regional Council is going solar powered.
“The electrical system is failing and it is costing a lot to ensure that the lights stay on every night,” said Planning and Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Trevor McDonald.
“It is a constant battle against the elements.
“The electrical system needs replacing, so rather than keep calling the electricians every time there is a problem we’ve decided to replace the lighting system.
“But we cannot do that until the work to replace the piers and decking has finished in two years otherwise we’d be putting new wires and conduit in place only to have to remove them as the refurbishment project advances down the pier.
“Instead we’re going to replace the current lights with solar powered lights.
The $20,000 project will also be a trial of the effectiveness of the solar lights.
If the new lights prove successful, council will consider wider usage of the lights.
“If we do install a new electrical system then these solar-powered lights will be used in other locations around the region away from the ocean.”
