Bed frames, mattresses, vertical blinds, hot water systems, tyres and roofing iron were among the items found on Burdekin’s Great Northern Clean Up of the Burdekin River bed.
Burdekin Shire Council Governance and Local Laws Manager Dan Mulcahy thanked all who came to help.
Mr Mulcahy said the event could be called a success due to the amount of illegally dumped rubbish collected.
“There were only a few helpers, but they managed to collect almost four tonnes of rubbish in just a couple of hours, which was a great effort.”
13 local residents attended.
“Imagine how much more could have been removed if more people had taken the time to help.
“It’s amazing what sort of items were found and the effort people must have gone to when they dumped it here in the first place.
“Most of the items found illegally dumped would have not cost the dumper anything if they had taken it to our waste transfer stations or to the Kirknie Road Landfill.
“It’s very disappointing to see this sort of rubbish being dumped in the river bed.”
