Grand tea for grandparents

Shoalhaven City Council has joined forces with the Nowra Family Support Service and the Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW in hosting Grand Tea for Grandparents events last month.

Events were held at both the Shoalhaven Family Day Care in East Nowra and at Milton Ulladulla Family Support Service.

Grandparents Day was launched in 2011 by the NSW Government as an annual initiative to recognise the role grandparents play in local communities.
Mayor Joanna Gash said grandparents play an irreplaceable role in providing the younger generations with care, love and guidance.

“Grandparents Day comes as a reminder to stop and say thank you and remember the special moments you have had with your loved ones.

“Most people have very fond memories of their Grandparents and the integral role they play within the formative years of your life.

“These events will see grandparents come together to share a morning tea with entertainment from local preschools and schools and the opportunity to meet other grandparents in their community.”

The events also included the release of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Resource Guide recently developed by Council in response to the increasing number of grandparents raising grandchildren in the Shoalhaven.

The guide includes information on services, networks and support groups that are available for grandparents.

It is available in booklet form and on council’s website.
