Heart Foundation Local Government Award

Whyalla City Council has been recognised for its contribution to tackling heart disease at the 2014 Heart Foundation Healthy Community Awards.

Dr Amanda Rischbieth, CEO Heart Foundation South Australia, said the council was named the State Winner in the ‘Councils with populations greater than 15,000’ category.

“Whyalla City Council demonstrated a strong focus on equity and initiatives that were targeted well to
their community.

“Local governments play a pivotal role in introducing structural change, implementing policies and creating supportive environments which allow people to be physically active, reduce smoking and improve their nutrition.”

Whyalla Mayor, Jim Pollock said his Council would accept the award with much pride.

“This award has been achieved through a great team effort of community services staff working closely with a diverse range of community and commercial organisations and groups.

“It has involved a number of programs including OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle), Council’s sports and recreation focus and WATCH (Whyalla Active Together Creating Health) which has now ended after achieving its aims.

“Whyalla Council maintains regular walking programs, has placed exercise units for free use at Civic Park and Whyalla Foreshore, and facilitated successful programs through the YMCA, UniSA, Mission Australia, restaurants
and supermarkets.”

Mr Pollock said improving the wellbeing and health of the Whyalla community was an important component in Council’s strategic plan.
He also congratulated ‘northern neighbour’ Port Augusta Council for its success in the under 15,000 category.

Now in their 22nd year, the Heart Foundation Local Government Awards provide an opportunity for local government to celebrate their achievements and receive recognition for their commitment to creating healthier communities.
