As a tribute to the Fremantle servicemen who died in World War One, students will lay crosses with the names of all 849 men who lived in the greater Fremantle area who never returned from the conflict.
The students will arrive at Monument Hill War Memorial Reserve and be assigned a cross which will bear the name of one of the servicemen.
At the end of the service the crosses will be laid down at the base of the main cenotaph of the Fremantle War Memorial.
Fremantle Mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt said this was an opportunity for Fremantle’s next generation to get involved with the commemoration and connect with the past generation.
“Laying 849 individual crosses will show that behind the names of the deceased servicemen is a real person, each with their own unique story.
“The school children will be carrying the memory of one of these men on the day, so I expect it to be a powerful and moving ceremony and just seeing the crosses carried by the students will reveal the scale of Fremantle’s loss during World War One.”
The laying of the crosses forms part of the, 849 project which culminates in the unveiling of a special commemorative plaque on Anzac Day 2015.
The crosses were assembled by the local Fremantle Men’s Shed.
