Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference 2014

Narrandera Shire Council recently hosted the NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference 2014.

The state-level conference attracted over 100 predominantly Aboriginal attendees, and a guest and speaker list that included past Governor of New South Wales the Hon Dame Marie Bashir, AD CVO, and members of parliament the Hon Linda Burney, Hon Michael McCormack and Hon Adrian Piccoli.

A robust program included a field trip to the Narrandera Fisheries and to Koori Beach for a bush tucker luncheon prepared by acclaimed international artist and local elder Mr Michael Lyons.

Attendees were welcomed to Country by one of the town’s most long-standing elders.

Didgeridoo performances and traditional dance combined with topics ranging from contemporary art, cultural heritage management, Indigenous education, health and disability ensured that delegates were revitalised, challenged and entertained throughout the three-day event.

Narrandera has placed itself on the map as a conference venue, and looks forward to hosting further conferences of this calibre into the future.
