Pay fines with food

As part of Hobsons Bay City Council’s sixth Food for fines program, libraries are accepting food such as tinned fruit and vegetables as payment for overdue charges.

From Monday 17 November until Sunday 14 December, library members with overdue materials will be able to donate one food item to pay up to $10 in overdue charges, with no limit on how much they can pay.

“While borrowers will have the option to pay for their overdue fines with food or money, people with no fines can also contribute to the collections,” said Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Colleen Gates.

“We’ve done it for six years now and a staggering 9,500 items have
been donated.

“This is a great example of how our libraries, through the activities they run, foster a sense of community – how they can educate beyond the more traditional format of reading and studying.”

The program supports local charities, which are inundated by requests during the December period.
