Solar Library

Hume Electrical’s Nathan Rawlings and Michael Osbourne installing some of the solar panels on the roof of the Mount Gambier library.

The City of Mount Gambier has begun the installation of the 57.5 kW solar system on the roof of the Library.

The system will comprise of 230 x 250W solar panels, and will cover virtually the entire available unshaded roof space on the sawtooth sections of the roof. The solar system is due to be completed in late January.

This solar system will be the first installed on any City of Mount Gambier facility.
The Mount Gambier Library is the ideal site for solar with a north facing angled roof, large electricity bill, and occupied during the day almost every day of the year.

This solar system will supply approximately 23 percent of the Library’s annual electricity usage, and deliver financial savings of approximately $18,000 per year.

The project stems from a renewable energy options report completed at the start of last year, and Council’s commitment to the Natural Step Framework, which includes reducing carbon emissions.
