Troy Cassar-Daley and Paul Kelly in Moree for Freedom Ride Celebrations

Organisers of the 50th Anniversary of the Moree Freedom Ride Celebrations are hosting a free concert with entertainers Troy Cassar-Daley and Paul Kelly on Friday February 20 2015.

The concert is sponsored by the University of Sydney and the NSW Local Aboriginal Lands Council with support from Moree Plains Shire Council.

Spokesperson for the organising committee Kylie Benge said that there is a week of commemorations recognising the 50th anniversary since the Freedom Ride to Moree.

“Sunday was the Official Opening of the Freedom Ride Week Commemorations and there are activities every day to mark the occasion.

“I am really excited about Friday’s program; at 1pm there will be a re-creation tour by the University of Sydney and street procession along Balo Street from the Dhiiyaan Aboriginal Centre to Moree Town Hall and opportunities to meet some of the original Freedom Riders.

“Thirteen of the original Freedom Riders who visited Moree in 1965 are expected to come to Moree for the commemorations and will be addressing the community alongside local identities who also took part in the Moree ride.

“Then there is a free twilight community concert with Troy Cassar-Daley and Paul Kelly at the Salvation Army Centre in Moree with local performers also performing on the day.”

Moree Plains Shire Mayor, Cr Katrina Humphries said that the Freedom Ride 50th Anniversary is a community inclusive event and encouraged all members of the community to participate.

“The Moree Plains Shire Council, along with the Moree Elders Group and many other great community members have been working long and hard to ensure the event commemorates the past and celebrates the future of Moree.”
