Working hard to stay on top of mowing

Fraser Coast council staff will be rostered on Saturdays to get on top of the rapidly growing grass.

The good rains and warm weather means the grass is growing – very quickly, Sport, Recreation, Open Space and Events Portfolio Councillor Darren Everard said.

“Council has about 800 hectares of parks, gardens and recreation areas to mow and maintain so it can take a bit of time to get around, especially if it’s raining.

“After the rain the staff have to wait for the grass to dry out enough before they can mow or it just clogs the mowers.

“The rain means some areas become boggy so they cannot be mowed until they dry out or the mowers churn up the ground and damage the turf which then has to be repaired.

“Council has a fleet of 37 slashers and ride-on mowers of various sizes in the mowing fleet.

“We also use contractors to slash roadsides and some of the larger open areas.

“Even then it takes about four weeks to make one circuit of
Maryborough’s Parks.

“Staff are doing their best to get around and the start of Saturday shifts will allow us to get more areas mown.

“In the meantime some parks may not be as manicured as they
are normally.”
