IMAG_NE a revitalised city centre

A new piece of temporary artwork is encouraging Mackay Regional Council residents to imagine what the City Centre will look like once the revitalisation project is finished later this year.

The visually-striking artwork called IMAG_NE has been installed at Bluewater Quay by the City Centre Taskforce.

It will remain there for a couple of weeks before being exhibited at other locations around the City Centre.

Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said the artwork was by internationally-renowned Australian artist Emma Anna.

“The artwork ties in well with the Imagine More theme being used for marketing of the City Centre during the revitalisation.

“We want residents to imagine what our City Centre will look like when the project is complete.

“This piece of temporary artwork is participation art, with people encouraged to stand in for the missing letter ‘I’ and have their photo taken.”

The IMAG_NE artwork will remain at Bluewater Quay until April 15.

IMAG_NE will then be at the Town Hall Park in Sydney Street until May 15, Caneland Park from May 15 to June 15, and the park next to the heritage-listed former Pioneer Shire Council building in Wood Street until July 17.

“We were very luck to source this piece of artwork,’’ said Cr Martin.

“The artist Emma Anna lives in Melbourne and Barranquilla in Columbia and works internationally.

“IMAG_NE was originally exhibited as part of Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi in 2008.

“She then received invitations to exhibit it nationally and internationally.”

The City Centre revitalisation project is jointly funded 50-50 by the Australian Government and Mackay Regional Council.
