Streamlined Local Environmental Plan

Penrith Council has welcomed the approval of its new streamlined Local Environmental Plan (LEP), which means Penrith can continue its transformation into an economic powerhouse of Western Sydney, while retaining lifestyle and environmental standards.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said that the new LEP plans the entire city and zones land to enable the development of thousands of new jobs and a diverse range of homes.
“More than $100 million worth of development is ready to be brought forward by landowners and developers as a direct result of this plan.

“The Penrith Health and Education Precinct is the perfect example of what this new LEP will help us deliver.

“The precinct will deliver more than 13,000 new jobs and 4,500 new homes for Penrith by 2036.

“These jobs will be provided in highly specialised sectors that complement and build upon the precinct’s existing health, education and research infrastructure.

“The new LEP makes planning information more accessible to residents, developers, business owners and community groups by repealing 35 outdated environmental planning instruments and consolidating these into a single city-wide LEP.

“A single LEP has considerable benefits, providing greater clarity and certainty over development opportunities and managing the growth of the City.

“It ensures areas are retained for their biological value and that other areas are left as rural.

“The LEP also helps deliver new dwellings in and around the Penrith City Centre and St Marys, and opens up a precinct close to the Nepean River for tourism and hospitality opportunities, including cafes and restaurants.”
