Communities having their say

South Australian Councils are currently looking to their communities for comment on draft budgets and business plans.

Local Government Association President, Mayor David O’Loughlin said unlike other spheres of government, Councils carry out a comprehensive consultation process, with their communities, before finalising their budgets.

“So the time to speak up is now.

“If there is something you feel the community needs, some service that needs reviewing, or infrastructure that could do with a makeover, now is the time to ask.

“Or if you feel that proposed rates need to be trimmed, raise the issue during the consultation period.

“It is clear from past experience that the majority of Councils will alter draft budgets as a result of community consultation.”

Mayor O’Loughlin said Councils are conscious that the Federal Budget will be brought down in a couple of weeks and the State Budget in mid-June which could add to the financial pressure on communities.

“State and Federal government budget measures, particularly if the State proceeds with its threat to axe the $190 rates rebate for pension and concession card holders from 1 July, will place extra pressure on household budgets.

“Councils can offer hardship options for rates payments, or postponement of rates, depending on the circumstances.

“If households are feeling financial pressure, talk to your Council as soon as possible, rather than have rate payments fall into arrears.

“Councils would much rather know whether their communities have special needs, or need particular measures taken, than be unaware that there is a problem.”
