New pool taking shape

Cairns Regional Council is currently undertaking preparation works for a 50m International Swimming Federation (FINA)-accredited swimming pool.

The construction includes a painstaking series of measurements and checks to meet the strict requirements imposed by the international governing body.

“There is no room for error – it has to be accurate to the millimetre,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“FINA don’t give their accreditation to just any pool and getting the measurements right is a highly specialised task.”

A total of 117 piles have been driven into the ground to create footings for the pool, enabling concrete to be poured into the base.

A site inspection by Councillors last week revealed work was powering ahead on the redevelopment project.

“The last time we looked at the site, there was nothing there, everything had been levelled and the pile driver had just started,” Cr Manning said.

“Now, things are starting to take shape.

“The site for the wave pool has been prepared, the main pool is well under way. We can see where everything will go.”

The new-look complex will include an artificial wave rider, a toddler waterplay pool, a new 25-metre program pool, a 500-seat grandstand, plus an upgrade to the existing program pool to cater for hydrotherapy services.

A memorial walkway and entrance feature will ensure the connection with the Rats of Tobruk is preserved and enhanced.

Tenders are currently being invited for both the lease and management of the pool and associated aquatic facilities and the lease of land for construction on the adjoining development site.
