The City of Melville will be hosting Noongar language classes, with classes for both children and adults on offer.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said language and culture were undeniably intertwined, as language had the power to reflect culture and influence thinking.
“Translated, Noongar means ‘a person of the south-west of Western Australia,’ or the name for ‘the original inhabitants of the south-west of Western Australia’ and is made up of 14 different language groups that correlate with different areas across the region.
“As part of the City’s ongoing work to facilitate opportunities for the community to express, share, learn and celebrate culture, Noongar lady Sharon Gregory will hold classes every Monday at the Willagee Community Centre to encourage cultural awareness and also to promote the relevance of the Noongar language and the words specifically used in the local Willagee area.”
The cost for the classes is $5.00 per class or a gold coin donation for concession card holders.
