The Fatality Free Friday campaign is an initiative to bring attention to the role people can all play in making Australia’s roads safer every day of the year.
Blue Mountains City Council Mayor Cr Mark Greenhill said Council is proud to support this year’s Fatality Free Friday on May 29.
“I was shocked to discover that in 2013, speed was a major contributing factor in 33 percent of crashes that occurred on Blue Mountains’ roads.
“This was in comparison to the 11 percent in the Sydney Region, and 17 percent for the whole of NSW.
“Law enforcement and road rules are at the core of safer road use, but nothing can match driver vigilance.”
To promote the campaign, Council, Transport for NSW and NSW Police displayed an inflatable car at Winmalee Coles on Saturday May 16.
Community members were encouraged to sign the car to demonstrate their commitment to being safer on the roads.
Mayor Greenhill said the message is clear.
“Safer roads in the Blue Mountains are everybody’s responsibility.
“We can all show leadership in our City and be the one to slow down.”
Fatality Free Friday is run by the Australian Road Safety Foundation which is a not for profit organisation established in 2007 to reduce road trauma across Australia.
