Palmerston was the chosen location for the ANZAC Living Memorials program in the Northern Territory, after the City of Palmerston’s expressions of interest was accepted in 2014.
The Palmerston project will see plantings undertaken within various Palmerston parks to commemorate the ANZAC centenary.
Conservation Volunteers Australia have developed the program as one of many activities in recognition of the ANZAC centenary.
The program will create 100 Living Memorials across Australia and New Zealand and aims to support locally driven activities that engage the community in commemorative events that are linked to our ANZAC history.
Council’s participation in the Living Memorials program honours both past and present service men and women, including members of the many Palmerston families who are in the Defence Force and have served overseas during the Iraq and Afghanistan Australian engagements.
The Council is pleased to support the program which ties in with many strategic activities Council is undertaking through its Sustainability Strategy 2013–2018: At Work – In the Community.
This strategy details Council’s commitment to long-term gains through increased protection and promotion of biodiversity corridors, habitat diversity and cultural values.
The first of four planting days took place on Thursday June 18, with City of Palmerston and Telstra staff planting trees at Sanctuary Lakes.
Telstra are one of the corporate organisations also engaged in the program.
The remaining planting days will be undertaken in the coming wet season.
