Port Pirie Regional Council has secured a grant worth almost $1.4 million towards rejuvenating the city centre.
The funding through the State Government’s Places for People program will be used for detailed design and development throughout Port Pirie’s city centre.
It will include upgrading public infrastructure, improving accessibility for pedestrians and enhancing the streetscape with landscaping, seating and public art.
The project is expected to take 18 months and will also include more than $1.8 million in Council funding.
“With the transformation of the Nyrstar Smelter underway, this is an opportunity to transform the city with the aim of changing perceptions of Port Pirie,” Council’s Infrastructure Director Kathryn Johnson said.
Extensive consultation will be held with the community, local businesses and stakeholders to finalise the design concept and minimise interruptions to trading.
Council has asked for the community’s patience, particularly during the construction process, as temporary disruptions will result in the long term gain of a CBD that generates community pride and stimulates the local economy.
The first stage of the regeneration is detailed design and contract documentation, which is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
