Disaster planning an international focus

Cairns is a popular destination for international guests this week, with delegations from France and the Philippines visiting to discuss disaster management.

A group of 20 Philippine delegates arrives in Cairns today with a focus on disaster management and community resilience, while two French Mayors will be treated to a tour of the Cairns Botanic Gardens tomorrow.

Cairns Mayor Councillor Bob Manning said Cairns is well placed to assist other regions in disaster management issues.

“Cairns is seen as an international leader in disaster preparation and response.

“This group is interested in learning how Cairns and the surrounding regions plan, prepare, respond and recover from cyclones and floods, as these events are particularly relevant to the Philippines.

“This is an opportunity to promote knowledge sharing and education links between Australia and the Philippines and help build resilience in tropical regions.”

The group includes representatives from various governmental departments and universities.

Tomorrow, Cr Manning will host the Mayors of the French cities of Villers Bretonneux and Corbie and their guests for a Melbourne Cup breakfast at the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

Cairns is a destination of choice for the regions’ delegates, having visited at least twice previously to enjoy Cairns’ attractions.

“We’re pleased to be able to host Mayor Patrick Simon (Villers Bretonneux) and Alain Babaut (Corbie) and their 25 guests,” Cr Manning said.

“Given that they are here on one of Australia’s most celebrated days, we felt it only fitting to host a special breakfast, showcasing local produce.

Following a brief break in Cairns, including a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and other local attractions, the group will be visiting Villers Bretonneux’s Sister City, Robinvale in Victoria.
