Wave energy plant to have Portland stopover

The first wave energy plant for south-west Victoria will make a short stopover in Portland this week.

A heavy-lift vessel carrying the bioWAVE plant is scheduled to arrive at the port on Wednesday 2 December. It will be in the port for part of the day before continuing on to Port Fairy for installation.

Crews will offload a work platform that will be kept at the Portland marina for a few weeks before being moved to a storage location.

The bioWAVE is a 26metre high steel structure that uses the energy of the ocean to produce up to 250kW of electricity. The electricity is transported to the grid via a subsea cable.

The bioWAVE is scheduled to arrive in Port Fairy on 3 December and then offloaded to the seafloor when weather permits.

This project will provide key data for the potential further development of this promising clean energy technology.
