Raising funds in the pink

During Breast Cancer Awareness month, Tweed Shire Council raised funds and adorned the council foyer with bras.

Council hosted a ‘pink’ morning tea for Pink Ribbon Day on 28 October, offering baked goods for a gold coin donation.
Council’s Director Corporate Services, Liz Collyer, said the event was a great success.

“All proceeds from the delicious morning tea went to Pink Ribbon Day fundraising, and along with other fundraising efforts, Council staff and the community were able to raise over $500.

“Tweed Shire Council also had a very special display for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the foyer of the Murwillumbah customer service area.

“Female staff members donated and decorated all kinds of weird and wonderful bras that were hung throughout the Council foyer, with the winners of the best decorated bras announced on the day.”
Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne, said events such as this one had been instrumental in promoting the benefits of early breast cancer detection.

“Breast cancer impacts on not only the physical and emotional health of those affected but the emotional health of all those around them too.

“I’d like to acknowledge the staff who have made this event happen – from the staff with the fabulous, and some rather outlandish, creative skills with the design of their bras to staff who have baked the scrumptious items we had for morning tea.

“In all there have been 28 bras entered for display and these have certainly provided a wacky new look to Council’s foyer area.

“The bras have brought a smile to everyone passing and, most importantly, I’m sure have made them stop and think about what it all means.”
